Hi Rosee
You probably won't know who I am - I'm Carol, Clare's friend from work - we sat opposite one another, and started our jobs at about the same time. I just wanted to say a huge thank you for keeping me in the loop of details that you sent to others, and apologies for not emailing you sooner.
Julie said you were going to visit Clare on Thursday night, when we were going to also see her. How very sad we didn't get to see Clare - sometimes things just aren't meant to be, but I hope you can take some comfort in the fact that we all got to share some very special times with her. Hopefully we will get to meet.
With best wishes
Carol

Did you get the photos I scanned from Peter?
How is Clare's mum coping- has Julie contacted you in the past 2 days?

Hi Anne
You know you can call me any time. I listened to Stand back".
"I'm not really that familiar with Stevie, I just know Clare loved her music.
I am definitely going to have Catch the Rainbow by Rainbow as it was a song she loved and introduced me to and it is beautiful. Do you know it?
I just listened to Sara and you're right! It is definately going on. I remember her playing it on several occasions. Please-if you think of anything else let me know. I'm finding it hard to get the 'appropriate' ones. I'm going to push it a bit with sweet child of mine (the rock bit at toward the end) but it is so Clare.
Thank you very much. We'll be starting with Clair by Gillbert O'sullivan. I didn't know the song but Clare used to dance to it with her mum. That has had me in pieces today. The funeral is going to be so difficult.
Thanks again. I love this song! More please.

Firstly, you have my deepest sympathy for your devastating loss and my respect as you were Clare's best friend and all that you have done for her and her Hong Kong friends, keeping us all in the loop.
For me I would go for Sarah by Stevie Nicks because it is such a beautiful track, and I think more appropriate. I don't want to step on anyone's toes here play it and see what you think. If you don't have it I'll get my hubby to send it to you 'cause I don't know how to do that via this (computer). It was definitely the first one we would always put on when we were having a Stevie Nick's night. I think it would be so right at Clares funeral. Stand Back is a great track but I don't think it is appropriate.
Take good care

you used the pic i sent you yesterday! it was one of the few she had with her hair down, she'd just been to the hairdressers and had it straightened and loved it but was still trying to tuck it behind her ears. We were in Ben crouch's and it was her birthday. I think it was 05. God I miss her.
I have a lot to contribute but right now I'm struggling with just writing the emails to everyone. I love everyone's stories. Most of which I have already heard. I'm so glad I met Anne all but briefly (tho stuart would think it was not brief enough as they were very late going back to their place) That too was in Ben C's.
One of the things i want to send you is what i wrote for a dating website called mysinglefriend.com Clare didn't edit what i wrote though we agreed later that the website was shit as beacuse everyone was put on by their friend, no one bothered to look for anyone, just waited to be contacted! I also asked for the impossible as I was too honest about Clare idea man. It was just a summary but was still a few paragraphs. You couldn't sum her up in less.
Thank you so much for doing this.
I've had the worst day so far, bawling and sobbing wise. And now I am nearly out of vodka.

Hi everyone.
I still don't have a date for the funeral but it will be in London.
Ann has said that because Clare wasn't very religious, and she has lost whatever faith she had now, she doesn't want some vicar who didn't know her droning on. So Syd will start things off by saying a little speech, then she has asked me to tell people who are coming, that anybody can stand up and say something about Clare if they would like to. So do feel free to prepare something, it will have to be fairly brief so others get the chance. Ann
won't be saying anything as it will be too upsetting and I don't think I will be able to either.
There will be music playing throughout and I'm trying to compile a CD of some of Clare's favourite songs. As you all know, Clare loved her music and this is turning out to be quite tricky as death metal or Dave Pearce's dance tracks somehow don't seem quite appropriate in the circumstances. I know we all had specific songs we will remember her by that she adored and so if there's any you think are fitting please do let me know. Her mum has given
me her suggestions and obviously I have my own having been dragged to rock nights, her first rave and various other gigs and dance floors in the 15 years I've known her. I don't know what I will do without my music teacher. Who will I pick up off the floor now?
I'll let you know any more arrangements when I get them.
It doesn't get any easier does it? I called her landline yesterday to hear her voice but it made me laugh as she had her posh voice on.
Sniff.
Julie.

Dear Rosee
I am so sad to read your emails. Though I only met Clare a few times I remember her clearly and particularly her strength and positivity and I can only begin to imagine how shocked and sad you are at the moment. How very tragic and unbelievable. The only thing to say is that it is a blessing that she is now at peace and leaves everyone with happy memories of her too short life.
I am thinking of you too, you have been through so much and you must be devasted by this as I know you became close friends.... Are you coping OK?
You will probably head to Nuneaton to be with your family? And I am now in Rotterdam permanently, but please let me know if there is anything at all that I can do. Also it goes without saying that if you need to escape the Netherlands are a short skip and jump from UK and a warm welcome will await you.
Thinking of you,
Hugs Catherine xx

Hi Everyone.
As I'm sure you already know now, Clare died yesterday at 4.pm. I wasn't there and I'm torturing myself about that but more importantly, her mum was. She said it was very peaceful, she opened her eyes, looked around and went. No pain, no stress or anxiety and she is thankfully at rest now. She'd been in so much pain and discomfort, it's a blessing. It would have been awful for her to have lingered in that state. Her poor mother is obviously broken hearted but relieved she's not suffering any more.
Clare's parents had been called to go in at 1am yesterday, they contacted me at 5.10 am saying she was asking for me and I got there at 6. She managed to settle and I left at 9 to try and let them both sleep. When I went back at lunchtime Clare was very anxious and they gave her something to make her feel calm. There was no sign she was going to go so quickly at that time.
The nurses where going to transfer her to an air mattress to make her more comfortable and then move her to a bigger room so people could come and visit. They said it would take 4 of them to move her so I left again to get out of the way. If I'd have known I would never have gone, I'm so stupid.
I went back at 4.30 and she looked so peaceful. She had the sunken cheeks and cheek bones at the end she 'd always wanted. Her face didn't look ravaged by this disgusting disease at all, she was truly beautiful.
Syd arrived shortly afterwards and was inconsolable. He'd brought vodka with him and we stayed several hours with her, laughing, crying, remembering what a remarkable lady she was. Our lives are never going to be the same again, I was very drunk by the time we went and I have left my mobile phone there (sorry if you've been trying to contact me, I'll have it back by this afternoon.
I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything about the funeral arrangements. I asked her mum about flowers as some people say not to send them but she said it's fine. Clare was going to change her name back to Gaffney this year and that's what name her mum is going to use. If any of you are in touch with Iain, please make sure she stays away (her mum's request). Clare has
asked to be cremated and that some of her ashes be taken to her favourite beach in Bali and Hong Kong of course.
I'm going to meet Kitty now, she has asked me to go with her to see Clare.
If any of you, at any time would like to meet up for a drink whilst listening to Dave Pearce or very loud rock music, I'd love to see you and as Clare would say, "Go hell for leather".
Julie.

Many thanks for forwarding this email regarding Claire its very sad i cant belive it was just last year we were on the ferry back to lantau here, chatting and laughing just like years back when Claire was living here full time, and then next day claire had phoned me to tell all about her mega hike she had done all over HK central and sheung wan district kind of walked here legs off in a way.
Karen rang me to tell me what had happen and i really couldnt belive it at first, and then i got this email here to confirm it, i do hope Claire dosent suffer too much and that the last few months can be made as much comfortable for her as they humanly can.
I have some really nice pics of Claire on Ann and Stuart junk here in hk taken a few years back if you give me a address i can send them to her if you like, Emma in them as well. it just a thought see what you think ? let me know anyway....."
"anyway if you get to see Claire please give her a big hug from me and wish her all the very best, hope to hear from you soon...take care

How wonderful you saw Dave Pearce. Clare loves him. We'd listen to his Dance Anthems on Sunday nights and text each other about how great the tunes were. Brilliant. Me, Julie and Clare went to Heaven in December to see Dave DJ. It wasn't one of his Dance Anthems, but it was the 1st time Clare had ever gone 'clubbing', so I'm glad she did that. It was a fun night!!! I'll tell her you saw him, or tell Julie to tell her. There is always that chance that I may not be allowed to see her.
The latest news today is that she won't be going to a hospice as they had hoped. It's unlikely she'll be with us for much longer. From the sound of things, she is deteriorating rapidly. She is not reading her text messages or cards. She is too unwell now. It's so sad Rosee. And so very unfair. I still expect to wake up from this nightmare or be told it's all been a mistake.
Take Care,
Kitty

Hi Rosee,
You don't know me - I'm Kitty (or Kath) and a good friend of Clares.
Thank you for the email. I've been very lucky tho - along with Julie - Ann and Sid have allowed me to see Clare whilst she has been so very ill. I was with Julie when Sid told us she was terminal. It has been such a shock and so heartbreaking. I usually speak to Clare every day - to me...she is my best friend.
I saw her yesterday aswell and was happy to see that one of the Doctors who was looking after her was someone I had worked with before (I'm a nurse). He's very handsome and I hoped that put a bit of a spring in her spirit. I've not seen her since she moved to the Oncology ward last night, as I am now on night duty. I will go in and see her on Friday. Julie and I speak every day and plan on having a drink for her after we visit Friday night (Australia Day drinks - I'm Australian - and Clare would normally be out on such a night).
Anyway, Clare used to tell me about you and spoke of you fondly. It was clear you are her very good friend. Something you no doubt know...but I thought I'd mention it all the same.
Take Care.
Kitty .
